The BSE midcap index gained 1.5 per cent , the BSE Smallcap Index rose nearly 2 per cent to close .
Finally, the BSE 30-share Sensex index declined 79 points , ie 0.3 per cent to close at 24,298 . The NSE 50-share Nifty index fell 23 points, ie 0.3 per cent to close at 7253 levels .
In heavyweights UltraTech Cement , ACC , SBI , Grasim , BHEL , Bharti Airtel , Axis Bank and L & T dropped from 3.2 to 2.1 per cent . However , Bajaj Auto , United Spirits , DLF , Asian Paints , NTPC , Hindalco , Sesa Sterlite and Coal India rose from 5.1 to 1.5 per cent .
In midcap space, HMT , Essar Ports , Essar Oil , Torrent Power and IFCI rose 20 to 12.2 per cent . In Smallcap stocks ITI , Nav Bharat Ventures , AGC Networks , Essar Shipping and National Fertilizers closed by 20 per cent stronger .
In Asian market today, the Nikkei fell 33 points , ie 0.2 per cent . Hang Seng , Straits Times and Kospi closed flat , while the Shanghai Composite closed by rising 0.8 percent. Although Taiwan index fell 25 points , ie 0.3 per cent .
